Lara's Story

When Lara* first connected with the team at Youth Initiative (YI) Southwest Sydney, she was navigating one of the most difficult times of her life. Pregnant and facing the threat of homelessness, Lara needed more than somewhere to sleep—she needed stability, safety and a plan for the future.

With compassion and guidance, the YI team helped Lara secure a rental property, giving her the space to focus on healing; preparing for motherhood, and rebuilding her life. Supported and empowered, Lara embraced the challenges of parenting with courage and commitment, all while adapting to the emotional and practical demands of her new reality.

Lara took onboard opportunities presented by YI team members, proactively engaging with local community programs such as parenting workshops and employment and education services.

Over just 18 months, Lara transformed her circumstances—and her outlook. She’s now working toward a career in the community sector, driven by a desire to support others who may be facing similar challenges.

A key factor in Lara’s success has been reconnecting with her family, a step supported by her YI team. That renewed bond has become a source of strength and encouragement, allowing Lara to dedicate her attention to her studies, her career aspirations, and her responsibilities as a mother.

Lara’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, personal growth, and the life-changing impact of sustained support. For the YI team, walking alongside her has been a privilege—and a reminder of what’s possible when hope is met with opportunity.
