In Nano’s Footsteps
Nano Nagle gave up comfort and privilege to walk into the dangerous streets of eighteenth-century Cork with a lantern, going to the people who needed her most. The Presentation Sisters of Wagga Wagga carried that impulse for 150 years, including the 35 years they held this Wagga Wagga property as a place of support.
By naming our newest transitional house after Nano, we acknowledge the unbroken line between a woman who opened a secret school in a mud cabin in 1750s Cork and the Sisters who, centuries later, kept a light burning in Wagga for those who needed refuge.
Her final words to her Sisters were: “Love one another as you have hitherto done. Spend yourselves for the poor.”
The Nano Nagle Cottage stands as a practical answer to that call. It will create a culturally safe, secure, and independent living environment, one designed to give women and children escaping domestic violence the stability from which to begin again.
