With a table covered in pamphlets, pens, and home-made playdough, Anglicare team members spent two days this August meeting students, career changers, and potential volunteers at Canberra’s CareersXpo.
CareersXpo brought together 135 exhibitors and more than 7,500 students from over 60 schools across the ACT and NSW. Across the two-day event, the Anglicare team spoke with more than 500 students, parents, teachers, support workers and career changers about volunteering, employment pathways and the wide range of services we provide across the region.
After more than 96 years of caring for people across our region, Anglicare has a strong reputation in the community. Even so, many visitors were surprised by the breadth of services we provide and the variety of career opportunities available.
From our Youth & Family Services, to Early Learning, Out of Home Care, Disability Services, and more, the expo was an excellent opportunity to showcase meaningful careers to the next generation of community service workers.
“Many people told us they want to do work that matters”, said Anglicare Recruitment Partner for Early Learning, Gaytri Verma. “They’re interested in roles that make a positive difference in the community, and at Anglicare they can do exactly that.”
Interest was particularly strong in careers supporting older people, people with disability, children and young people. Many students were also keen to learn about volunteering opportunities, including community pantry services, retail stores and other community support programs. For some, volunteering was a way to give back to their community, while others saw it as an opportunity to gain practical experience and develop skills for a future career in community services.
“It was great to talk directly to students about their career goals and how Anglicare might support them in achieving those goals,” said Renee Buchanan, Anglicare Recruitment Partner for Out of Home Care.
”One of the great things about Anglicare as an employer is the diversity of roles available and the way those roles contribute to creating positive change in the community. I think that is part of why our stall was so popular, along with the home-made play dough we were handing out.”

One of the highlights of the expo was meeting Janet*, a former participant in Anglicare’s CYCLOPS Young Carer program. Janet approached the team at the beginning of the event and spoke warmly about the support she received through the program, praising Anglicare’s work with young carers and the difference it had made in her life.
Now exploring her own career options, Janet shared that she is considering a future in community services, a powerful reflection of the positive impact that support services can have on young people’s lives.
Connections like this drive home the message that our work matters and why attracting the next generation of dedicated professionals is so important.
