Eden Canoe Project

The Eden Canoe Project is a unique cultural and community‑building initiative created through a partnership between Anglicare and the Twofold Aboriginal Corporation (TAC).

Through a hands‑on process of building, painting, and paddle‑touring wooden canoes, the program gives Indigenous young people opportunities to strengthen cultural identity, grow confidence, and connect deeply with their community.

Reconnecting Young People with Culture and Country
At the heart of the project is the belief that learning from Elders and spending time on Country gives young people grounding, pride, and purpose. Under the guidance of Anglicare Community Chaplain Revd. Michael Palmer and respected community mentor Uncle John Stewart, participants discover stories, knowledge, and skills passed down through generations.
During canoe journeys, participants learn about ancient fishing practices, local landmarks, and the living history held in the land and water. From rock formations once used as traditional fishing traps to the symbolism found in local plant life, each paddle becomes an opportunity to understand cultural knowledge in a real and powerful way.

Building Belonging and Capability

The canoe workshops are more than an artistic or recreational experience — they are an important developmental program. As young people design, build, and decorate their canoes, they gain:

  • practical craftsmanship skills
  • teamwork and leadership experience
  • confidence through achievement
  • strong, supportive relationships with mentors and community members

These workshops are now being integrated into TAC’s Career Choice Exposure Program (CCEP), helping disadvantaged youth broaden their aspirations and develop employability skills in a culturally safe and meaningful environment.

Why It Matters

For many young people, the opportunity to learn directly from those who hold traditional knowledge is rare. The canoe journeys create space for stories, laughter, reflection, and connection — helping young people see themselves as part of a proud lineage, surrounded by strength and community, just like the cherry tree sheltered by two sturdy gums.
