First and foremost were the showbags. Everyone agreed about that last Friday morning when participants from Anglicare’s Disability Services in Holt explored the 99th Royal Canberra Show.
Beating the heat of the day, the group gathered along Showbag Alley, to choose between dinosaurs, ninjas, Darell Lee, Bluey and many other favourites. Zoey, a long-time participant, couldn’t have been more thrilled with her choice—a Peppa Pig bag.
With showbags in hand, the group made their way through the Farmyard Nursery, patting fluffy alpacas and baby chicks, admiring sleepy puppies and rabbits, and marvelling at the sheep, geese and even a lone bull.
While a trip to the Canberra Show is a much-loved annual tradition, regular excursions are a key part of our disability programs. Outings help participants build confidence, enjoy social connection and stay engaged with their community—supporting both mental and physical wellbeing.
Anglicare’s Disability Services in Holt and Goulburn enjoy regular visits to local shops, movie theatres, bowling alleys, swimming spots and more. Activities are participant-led and planned around participant goals and interests.
Recently, the team in Holt has also introduced an Eat & Meet dinner club, where participants gather fortnightly to try different local restaurants.
The group wrapped up the day with a visit to the four-level Funhouse and a friendly chat with Constable Kenny Koala—a perennial favourite amongst the group.
