Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC

Earlier this month, Anglicare teams from across the region came together to celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC, embracing the theme The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy through a variety of local events.

South Coast

In sunny Moruya, staff hosted a stall at Mogo’s Big Day Out, enjoying the live music, cultural activities, traditional dancing and more.

The turnout was as impressive as the weather, and representatives from our Housing and Homelessness, Disability and Emergency Relief teams distributed food and shared information about our services—strengthening our connection to the community.

Many team members also attended the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s traditional Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and Flag Raising Ceremony, where they heard from inspiring young Indigenous leaders and other guest speakers.

Wagga Wagga

On the other end of the weather spectrum, our Wagga Wagga-based services braved a cold and rainy day for their annual NAIDOC celebration at Anglicare’s Ashmont Community Resource Centre. But the grey skies and sideways rain didn’t dampen spirits.

The community gathered inside to enjoy traditional dancing and hear about a recent program where local teen girls learned to make traditional fishnets under the guidance of Elder Auntie Joycelyn.

Staff served warm chicken curry, kangaroo stew, coffee and cake to all, while local barbers offered stylish haircuts to brave youngsters. As the rain eased, many gathered around the fire outside, sharing stories and warmth.

By the end of the day, the ground was muddy, but hearts were full—a testament to the resilience and unity of Ashmont’s community.

Canberra

Throughout the week, our Goulburn and Canberra-based Early Learning Services (ELS) honoured the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through storytelling and art.

Children from the Anglicare at Franklin School ELS walked to Gubur Dhaura Heritage Park to connect with nature. Before exploring, and singing traditional songs, they recited an Acknowledgment of Country:

“Yuma land, Yuma sky, Yuma me, Yuma friends. We would like to thank the Ngunnawal people for the land where we play, learn and grow. We promise to look after it.”

The ACT Community Sector NAIDOC Event will be held in October, with Anglicare actively involved in its planning. We look forward to another special day of community, culture, and connection.
