Snehal Christian of Anglicare’s Southern Cross Early Learning Service
After ten years of caring for children at Anglicare’s Southern Cross ELS in Scullin ACT, Jamin Shrestha and Snehal Christian both still love what they do—and the proof is in the joy on the faces of the children they care for.
Both Snehal and Jamin joined the Anglicare Early Learning team in 2014 and their longevity has allowed them to build meaningful relationships with children and their families, contributing to Southern Cross ELS’s ability to provide consistent, evidenced-based, quality care.
Jamin initially joined the Southern Cross team through the work-placement component of her Diploma of Early Childhood Education. “Right after I finished the diploma, they offered me a full-time role, and I have been here since”, she said.
Jamin explains her long tenure like this: “I’ve enjoyed my time here and all the support I’ve had. Everyone is very hard working, and they offer support whenever I need it. It has been wonderful, and that is why I am still here at Anglicare.” But there is another, simpler reason Jamin continues in her role: “I just love working with the children”, she said. “It is the most important thing”.
For Snehal, who came to Australia in 2007, the road to Anglicare was not as straightforward. In her home country of India, Snehal earned degrees in Classical Indian Music and Economics and worked as a music teacher for 13 years. When she arrived in Australia, with no local qualifications, she worked at a supermarket and looked after her two young daughters before beginning her early education training.
After completing her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, Snehal began work as a casual educator. Southern Cross ELS was the first place she was sent, and straight away her professionalism and warmth were recognised by the leadership team. She was offered a full-time roll and hasn’t looked back. “I love to work here”, she said. “It is close to my heart.”
Both educators say a highlight of their role is when the relationships they’ve built with children are recognised by families. “When the children go home and tell their families about you, and then the parents come in and say, ‘Our children talk about you’—that’s special. It makes us feel very blessed”, said Snehal.
Shannon Barker, Southern Cross ELS’s Centre Director, is incredibly grateful for Jamin and Snehal’s ongoing dedication. “Jamin’s ability to build strong, caring relationships with children, families and colleagues is remarkable”, she said. “The children light up when Jamin enters the room, and her positive attitude is felt by everyone around her. She’s a fantastic team player who contributes to a strong, supportive environment, and her presence is a big part of what makes the service so special.”
Shannon also praised Snehal: “Her room is filled with joy, calm and the kind of care that only comes from someone who genuinely loves what they do”, said Shannon. “Snehal is the kind of educator who makes a lasting impression—not just on the children, but on families and colleagues too. Her knowledge and insight help shape meaningful learning experiences that support each child’s growth, and her kindness leaves a mark on everyone she meets.”
We would like to thank Snehal and Jamin for their ongoing commitment to Anglicare, Southern Cross ELS and the children they support to grow and develop.
