Reflecting on Synod: A commitment to Christ-Centred Service

This month, Anglicare was honoured to participate in the final session of the 48th Synod—joining members from across the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn to reflect on how our shared purpose and actions can best serve God’s will.

In his address, Rt Rev Bishop Mark Short described aspects of an ideal diocese, saying:

“When we seek to be a diocese that creates a pipeline of theologically competent and confident clergy and laity, we commit to being attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit in calling, equipping and sending out women and men for service in God’s name.”

As the charitable arm of the Anglican Diocese, Bishop Mark’s words resonate deeply with Anglicare’s mission to serve communities with compassion, dignity, and hope.

Anglicare CEO, Trevor Ament and Board Chair, Mark Brandon-Baker were privileged to present to the Synod, offering insight into the breadth and depth of Anglicare’s ministry. Their presentation highlighted how Anglicare is not just a service provider, but a missional partner—walking alongside churches, parishes, schools and communities to respond to need, injustice, and disadvantage.

Much of Synod’s deliberations focused on encouraging active discipleship, urging members to say “I do to Jesus” through their actions—whether by stepping into leadership roles, creating youth ministries or joining boards and committees.

Anglicare is honoured to be an organisation that specialises in this kind of “doing”. From early learning and homelessness support to emergency relief and youth services, our work is grounded in the Gospel imperative to love and serve. The Synod’s affirmation of Jesus as Lord and Savour aligns with this daily commitment to serve with grace and humility.

We were especially encouraged by the Synod’s engagement with our vision and the recognition of Anglicare’s role in the life of the church—a role we hope to grow through deeper collaboration.

As we move forward, we do so with an attitude of action. Let us all say “I do” to Jesus by continuing to serve the vulnerable, advocate for justice and build communities of hope.
