2025 Winter Appeal

Your gift today can provide emergency shelter, warmth, and critical support to those facing homelessness this winter.

The housing crisis is getting worse. We need your help, so we can keep our doors open to people like Robert, who have nowhere else to turn.

“Homeless people have no voice. There’s too many of them out on the street with nowhere to go. I know how they feel now because I’m one of them.”

–  Robert, Anglicare Housing and Homelessness client

A dire lack of affordable housing is making it nearly impossible for Anglicare’s Housing and Homelessness teams to adequately support a rising number of clients.

As a result, many, like Robert, face homelessness through no fault of their own.

Following his father’s passing, Robert was forced to leave the family home. “I lived in that house most of my life”, he said, “but then I had to get out straight away.”

Robert lives with physical and cognitive disabilities and uses an electric scooter and crutches to get around. He requires assistance completing forms and navigating the internet, making applying for rentals and attending property inspections difficult.

For six months the team secured Robert temporary accommodation in motels, assisted him to fill out rental applications, drove him to view properties, wrote letters of support and, eventually, helped with his rental bond.

This team has been absolutely amazing“, said Robert. “I can’t thank them enough. They’ve always been there for me. They’re good people.

Eventually, after supporting Robert to apply to every suitable property in the area for over six months, the Anglicare team helped him move into his own private rental property—providing him with financial assistance for a removalist and his bond.

Unfortunately, Robert’s story doesn’t end there.

After living as a model tenant in his new property for twelve months, his landlord decided to sell the property for personal reasons. Robert was given six weeks’ notice to vacate.

Across our region, people like Robert have nowhere to turn except services like Anglicare, but our teams are becoming overwhelmed.

Already this financial year, our Housing and Homelessness teams have assisted nearly double the number of clients we are funded to support.

I don’t know if I’ll make it out of that again“, said Robert. “Being in that motel room for that long, in that small space, with only a microwave to cook with, it was very hard.”

Robert will once again be supported by Kahla and the Anglicare team. “The situation has gotten so bad over the past 12 months,” said Kahla. “But he has been proactive and engaging and pushed himself to his own limits to help his own cause”, said Kahla. “We will advocate to the hills for him. We’ll do everything we can.”
